What is Seasoned Hardwood?

Seasoned hardwood is hardwood that has been split and allowed to dry, typically outdoors, so its moisture content drops to around 15–20%. This process—called seasoning—can take 6 months or longer, depending on wood type and conditions. Seasoned logs burn efficiently, producing more heat and far less smoke than unseasoned wood, and greatly reduce the risk of chimney fires thanks to less creosote buildup. You can recognise seasoned wood by its lighter colour, cracked ends, and a crisp, hollow sound when two pieces are knocked together.

Properly seasoned hardwood burns hotter and cleaner than "green" or unseasoned wood, meaning more warmth and less mess for your home.

Hardwood vs. Softwood

Hardwoods (ash, oak, birch, beech) come from deciduous trees, burn longer and hotter, and produce less sap and tar. Softwoods (like pine, spruce) burn faster, with more smoke and resin—meaning more chimney cleaning and less heat per log.
